MICHIGAN CITY — A recent food drive in Michigan City provided families with Thanksgiving meals and additional food distribution events are forthcoming.

During a period of heightened food insecurity driven by inflation, elevated grocery costs and recent SNAP challenges, the Food Bank of Northern Indiana organized a mobile turkey distribution event, Turkeys on the Table, supported by contributions from neighbors across the six counties it serves, including in La Porte County.

The initiative recently provided turkeys, side dishes, apples and potatoes to 500 families.

Jim Musial, executive director of Citizens Concerned for the Homeless, expressed deep gratitude for the support extended to families in Michigan City and La Porte County.

Citizens Concerned for the Homeless coordinated the event in Michigan City, assisted by more than 35 volunteers who managed food distribution and traffic control.

Appreciation is also extended to Marquette Mall for permitting use of the mall for the event, and to the dedicated volunteers from CCH’s Keys to Hope Community Resource Center, Faith City Assembly of God, Road to Life Church, Sacred Heart Food Pantry at St. Mary’s, as well as numerous families and individuals who contributed their time.

Despite these efforts, the demand exceeded supply, and some families were unable to receive turkeys, according to Musial

Musial encouraged continued support for local food pantries to assist those affected by current economic conditions.

Citizens Concerned for the Homeless will host a mobile food distribution at Marquette Mall on Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon, providing non-perishables, fruits, vegetables and three-pound hams for 350 families.

This event is made possible by a grant from the Health Foundation of La Porte under the Food Assistance Emergency Grant program.
